After taking second a couple of weeks ago, Matt was confident he could improve and take a win at Lakeside.
After the
usual early attacks, the race settled into a
rhythm which saw Matt get into a big break. This was eventually brought back and so the bunch worked hard towards the Prime. Matt sat in through the sprint, but then put the hammer down through the main straight to cause another split.
With about half an hour left to race, Matt and a breakaway companion started to gain time on the rest of the bunch. The two worked well together and managed to maintain their advantage. With 5 minutes to go, it looked like the bunch might catch Matt in the break, but the two increased the tempo to make sure they
entered the last lap with enough gap to fight it out for the win.
On the second last climb, Matt tested the water with a big
acceleration, but this wasn't enough. However, on the final climb, Matt put in an all out attack to ride away from his breakaway companion and ride in with plenty of time in front of the bunch to take a solo win.
